Atubolu-Poker: SC Freiburg wants 20 million Euro transfer fee

The summer is a difficult one for Noah Atubolu. The DFB goalkeeper is on the bench at SC Freiburg, waiting longer than planned. In the spring, he decided not to extend his contract with the club. A new challenge is on the horizon, preferably in the Premier League.

Because the Freiburgers wanted long-term planning security, they signed Mio Backhaus as the new number one. For Atubolu, there is no place left, the goalkeeper wants and will leave in any case. To avoid jeopardizing a transfer, the goalkeeper is in consultation on the bench. He trains only rarely with the team, and the training camp in Austria is completely skipped.

What's next?

The exchange with Noah is still very close and trustworthy, says Sport Director Klemens Hartenbach. The functionary and Atubolu himself would have liked to have clarified things earlier. Maybe we all underestimated how late the tempo comes in this special goalkeeper market. In a World Cup year, many clubs do not want to commit to the sensitive goalkeeper position so early. The domino stones are not yet so fallen.

This will happen soon, however. It's a bit of a transition, that Noah, after talks with his agents, also conducts personal talks with clubs himself. In Freiburg, he has greater flexibility to start such conversations than in Schruns. Of course, SC Freiburg is not giving Atubolu so many freedoms out of charity. The club wants to get a transfer fee of around 20 million euros for their goalkeeper.
