SC Freiburg coach Julian Schuster identifies Eintracht Frankfurt as a potential destination for goalkeeper Noah Atubolu as the player seeks a new challenge. Noah Atubolu remains under contract with SC Freiburg ahead of the Bundesliga season, but will not receive playing time according to current plans. Coach Julian Schuster now commented on the future of the 24-year-old goalkeeper and saw a prospect for him in Frankfurt.
After the convincing 5-1 victory against Fortuna Düsseldorf in the first round of the DFB-Cup, Schuster emphasized that a move to Frankfurt could be sensible for the athlete. "Frankfurt is naturally a very large club in Germany. Therefore could be a possibility to stand between the posts there," Schuster told SWR Sport. Previously, after a friendly against Crystal Palace, the coach noted that Atubolu is lucky to be under contract with SC Freiburg. The entire club and team handle the situation professionally, which is not always the case.
However, it is now clear that a future in Freiburg no longer exists for Atubolu. The goalkeeper was the undisputed number one for the last three seasons. His wish was to leave the club in the summer, with a move to the English Premier League preferred, but this did not materialize. Now, Eintracht Frankfurt is considered the ideal solution for the German-stopper.
SC Freiburg already reacted early to the succession by signing Mio Backhaus from league rivals Werder Bremen. Schuster explained that they are constantly in contact with the new keeper and regularly integrate him into training accordingly. It is the club's duty to keep the player at a good level as long as he is under contract.
While negotiations for Atubolu continue, the squad is focusing on the upcoming season. SC Freiburg finished the league standing (final 2025 table -- new season not yet under way): 7th in Bundesliga, 47 pts, 13W-8D-13L from 34 games, recent form WLDLW. The last match ended with a 4-1 against RB Leipzig (2026-05-16). Currently, the trainer is still missing Florent Muslija, Karl Steinmann, Rihito Yamamoto, and Berkay Yılmaz in regular service.
