Ginter scores SC Freiburg to victory in Motherwell
SC Freiburg won the first leg of the Conference League qualification 3:1 against Motherwell FC and secured a good starting position for the return leg. Regan Charles-Cook brought the hosts into the lead in the 2nd minute, Matthias Ginter equalized after a half hour (28) and turned the game in the second half with a penalty kick (65). In the stoppage time, Keisuke Goto scored the final point (90.+5).
Ginter remains cool from the point
After the break, the game was initially more open, as the third-placed team in the Scottish league tried to be more offensive - without creating much danger. The more active team was still the Sport-Club. However, the Schuster-Elf struggled to build on the pressure of the first half. As the game just plodded along, Suzuki passed Engelhardt with a great through ball. The midfielder was just before the finish from Martin Moorman's shoulder - penalty for the Sport-Club and yellow card for Moorman. The VAR intervened again and sent referee Radu Marian Petrescu to the screen. According to the images, Moorman was later seen as red-carded. Ginter took responsibility for the penalty kick and shot coolly in. For the defender, it was his first double of his professional career.
Four official games in eleven days for SC Freiburg
After the appearance in Scotland, the Sport-Club returns to Germany, where on Sunday evening (18:00) the first round of the DFB-Pokal against relegation candidate Fortuna Düsseldorf is on the schedule. After the return leg against Motherwell on Thursday (18:45), the Freiburgers will receive Werder Bremen three days later on the first Bundesliga matchday. The SC Freiburg started in the Fir Park with the newcomers Mio Backhaus and Yannik Engelhardt in the starting formation. Captain Christian Günter and Vincenzo Grifo, who had extended his contract the day before, sat on the bench initially. The game started with a shock for the Bundesliga team. Already after about 60 seconds, goalkeeper Backhaus had to fall back. The Freiburgers did not defend a counter-attack over the right side consistently enough, in the center Charles-Cook was in front of Max Rosenfelder and scored for the lead.
SC Freiburg is currently in 7th place in the Bundesliga and has collected 47 points in the last season. In the current season, they have scored 51 goals and 57 have been defended. They are 42 points behind the leaders Bayern München. Their last win was on May 16, 2026, when they defeated RB Leipzig 4:1. In their last 5 games, they have 2 wins, 1 draw, and 2 losses. They are currently on a 2-game winning streak.
