SC Freiburg won their final friendly match before the Bundesliga resumes. On Friday, the league's third-placed team beat FC Luzern 4-2 (3-1).
Vincenzo Grifo put SC ahead in the 11th minute. Lars Villiger equalised for the Swiss side in the 18th, but Freiburg took control. Lucas Höler scored in the 26th minute to restore the lead before Matthias Ginter made it 3-1 just before the break. After half-time, Höler completed his brace in the 62nd minute for 4-1. Adrian Grbic netted a late consolation for Luzern.
Head coach Christian Schuster was pleased with the execution of the week's training themes. "A lot of what we worked on this week was visible today," said the SC coach. "When we combine through or win the ball high up, we wanted to play it through to the end and create chances."
At half-time, Schuster brought on Anthony Jung and Maximilian Eggestein for Ginter and Rihito Yamamoto to add fresh legs to defence and midfield. A concern arose when Cyriaque Irié had to be substituted due to injury in the 77th minute.
The win fits Freiburg's strong form, as they sit third in the Bundesliga with ten points from four games. A look at the full standings shows they are just two points off the top.
Attention now turns to points on Saturday, October 10th, when SC host 11th-placed FC Schalke 04 at the Europa-Park Stadion.
