SC Freiburg knows the effort that comes with hosting an international match in their own stadium. Philipp Lienhart with Austria, Johan Manzambi with Switzerland, Igor Matanovic with Croatia and Yuito Suzuki with Japan travel through the three WM countries, where 16 locations and their stadiums have been prepared for the World Cup for months. In twelve of the stadiums, American football is actually played. Therefore, some adjustments had to be made to make the arenas football-friendly. The requirements for WM stadiums are high. In some cases, new grass was laid, while at other locations, additional and temporary stands were set up for the WM. When the Sport-Club received the bid for the Nations League match of the German national team against Bosnia and Herzegovina at the Europa-Park Stadium in May 2024, the requirements were not quite as severe - but the event was still a lot of work. Daniela Danzeisen accompanied the preparation and implementation of the international match as project manager from the Sport-Club and says: "The topic of international match has accompanied us since the construction of the stadium. We have always wanted to host an international match at the Europa-Park Stadium." A bid to the German Football Association (DFB) was necessary to have a chance to host an international match. In the second attempt, it was successful. "We have perfect conditions in the stadium and in May 2024, we then received the bid for the Nations League match in November," says Danzeisen. The DFB and UEFA have requirements in many areas that a club must implement for an international match. "In our bid, we had to provide the DFB with all documents, stadium plans and also a financial security and thus ensure that we can offer all required areas." The largest and most labor-intensive adaptation to DFB requirements was the redesign of the south stand. At international matches, standing areas are not allowed - the entire south stand was therefore equipped with seats. Also in the areas of greenkeeping, hospitality and security, SC employees worked for weeks to implement DFB requirements to host an international match at the Europa-Park Stadium. A lot of work for a football match, which the SC gladly took on due to the long-standing wish to host an international match. Already a few weeks before the international match, employees of the DFB visited the stadium. "At this visit, it was mainly about the areas of security, catering, stadium organization, hospitality, ticketing and neutralization of the stadium. This means that the stadium does not shine in the SC look for an international match, but gets a DFB branding." Similar to games in the UEFA Europa League or the DFB-Pokal, sponsor banners are covered with competition-specific plans. Under the stadium roof, the flags of the UEFA and the two participating nations, Germany and Bosnia and Herzegovina, were waving. An international match is a different stadium experience than, for example, a Bundesliga match. "The atmosphere is completely different. There is no guest block, the public is only there for the German national team. That's a very special feeling that you don't often experience."
